The more powerful Audi 80 and Audi Super 90 sports saloons (with 80 and 90 PS respectively) appeared in 1966; the Audi 75 replaced the 80 from 1969, and by the final months of 1968 the range had settled at the Audi 60 (55 PS), Audi 75 (75 PS) and the Audi Super 90 with 90 PS, "able to challenge the performance image of some of the smaller BMWs". With the exception of the Super 90 the F103 series were also available as three-door Variant estates; the Super 90 was offered as a 2- or 4-door saloon and sold in the US (6,557 in 1970, 2,425 in 1971, 1,928 in 1972). Like the rest of the F103 they use the longitudinally mounted M118 four-cylinder with a four-speed manual and inboard front disc brakes, on a 2,490 mm (98 in) wheelbase. The page's spec table gives three displacements and six speeds across the five models, mapped here in ascending order.

The first Audi 80 and Super 90 were built on a two-stroke DKW chassis, but Audi partnered with none other than Daimler-Benz to give them an all-new four-stroke engine range.

The engines in these early Audis started life as a Daimler-Benz military project that was never built. Mercedes handed the design to Auto Union instead, and it ended up here, under an Audi hood.

Nissan hired former BMW engineers to help develop the 510's suspension, which is why period reviewers frequently compared its handling to the BMW 1600/2002.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.

The GS/E coupe earned the nickname "German Charger" for its long hood, short deck stance borrowed from Detroit muscle cars.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
