The Stelvio (Type 949) is Alfa Romeo's first production SUV, a D-segment luxury crossover revealed at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show and built at the Cassino plant from the end of 2016. It uses the Giorgio platform of the Giulia, raised and widened, with the same engines and a carbon-fibre driveshaft, and has 50/50 weight distribution. It is offered with rear- or all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic; the high-performance Quadrifoglio is a separate model.

Alfa Romeo named its first SUV after the Stelvio Pass — Italy's highest mountain road, famous for 48 tight switchbacks stacked up a single mountainside.

At 1,660 kg it undercuts a BMW X3 by 145 kg and a four-cylinder Porsche Macan by 110 kg despite sharing the Giulia's platform.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.
