FactThe Taos started life under the internal codename Project Tarek before Volkswagen settled on a Texas town instead.
The Taos is a compact crossover released in October 2020 as a restyled version of the Volkswagen Tharu, sold in China since October 2018, for the North and South American and Russian markets. Developed as "Project Tarek", it is based on the MQB A1 platform shared with the SEAT Ateca and Škoda Karoq, and is built in Puebla, Mexico, and (until 2025) General Pacheco, Argentina. US and Canadian models use a 1.5-litre TSI Evo turbo four; Latin American ones a 1.4-litre TSI. For the 2025 model year the North American Taos was refreshed with a revised 1.5-litre engine and a standard 8-speed automatic.
