A heavily redesigned Scirocco (291,497 made) shown at the March 1981 Geneva show, still on the A1 platform and built by Karmann in Osnabrück, designed by Volkswagen's own team with more headroom, luggage space and lower drag; a rear spoiler sat midway up the hatch glass. Eleven engines from 1.3 to 1.8 L, carburetted and injected: 60 to 112 PS for the eight-valves and 95 or 102 PS for the 16-valve (developed by Oettinger in 1981, on sale in Germany from July 1985). US sales continued to 1988 (Canada 1989); the Japanese-market car was the 1.8 GTi only. Many trims (L to GTX 16V) and special editions (California, Storm, White Cat, Tropic, Wolfsburg, Slegato). The Corrado effectively replaced it.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Volkswagen built the second-generation Scirocco at Autoeuropa in Portugal rather than in Germany.

The second-generation Scirocco was designed by Herbert Schafer and, unlike its predecessor, was styled entirely in-house at Volkswagen rather than by Karmann or Giugiaro.

The Scirocco wore the GTi badge first — it hit production months before the Golf GTI that would go on to define the hot hatch.
