FactVolkswagen launched the T-Cross simultaneously in three cities on three different continents — Amsterdam, Shanghai and São Paulo — to underline that this was a genuinely global car from day one.
The Volkswagen T-Cross is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) manufactured by Volkswagen, based on the MQB A0 platform shared with the Polo Mk6 and officially launched in April 2019, positioned below the T-Roc and alongside the Taigo/Nivus. It started as a replacement for a cancelled Taigun small SUV project, and was previewed in 2016 as the T-Cross Breeze concept, a four-seater convertible with a fabric top. The production version was launched on 25 October 2018 simultaneously in Amsterdam, Shanghai and São Paulo, demonstrating its nature as a global product; the European model is built together with the Polo at Volkswagen Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, while the models produced in China and Brazil have a modified length of 4.2 m and a longer wheelbase of 2.65 m shared with the Škoda Kamiq and Volkswagen Virtus. VW markets it as the more practical and family-oriented car compared with the Golf-based T-Roc, appealing to young families and older demographics through its tall roof and high driving position, and all European T-Cross variants are front-wheel drive as the Polo-sourced underpinnings do not support all-wheel drive.
