The Toyota Platz is a subcompact car manufactured in Japan (Takaoka) by Toyota from 1999 until 2005, when it was replaced by the Belta; designated the XP10 series, it was also sold in export markets as the Toyota Yaris or Echo (a two-door version exclusive to North America from the 2000 model year), derived from the Vitz hatchback with which it shares front doors, a common interior and mechanicals on the Toyota NBC platform (related to the Yaris Verso/FunCargo, Vios XP40 and ist/Scion xA). "Platz" is German for "space"; only straight-four engines were fitted, and it was sold in Japan as a four-door sedan only through Toyopet Store and Netz Toyota Store dealerships (the same platform underpins the JDM-only Probox and Succeed wagons and the WiLL Vi). Engines: 1.0 L 1SZ-FE, 1.3 L 2NZ-FE and 1.5 L 1NZ-FE, plus in China the 1.3 L 8A-FE, 1.5 L 5A-FE and the Chinese-made 1.6 L CA4GB2, with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic; wheelbase 2,370 mm (93.3 in), length 4,145 mm (1999–2002) or 4,180 mm (2002–2005), width 1,660 mm, height 1,500 mm FWD / 1,510 mm 4WD (Japan only), curb weight 850–1,010 kg (4-door). In China it was the Xiali 2000 from December 2000 to March 2004, then lightly facelifted as the Xiali Vela (March 2004 to 2012), with a limited-edition Xiali Yaku in 2002–2003. The US Echo sold almost 50,000 in its first year (161,459 in total by 2007) as part of Toyota Project Genesis, and Monash rates the XP10 "poor" (two out of five stars) for occupant protection. The page gives no power figures.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

It briefly served as senior sibling to Marquette, a GM companion brand cancelled after just one year.

Nissan hired former BMW engineers to help develop the 510's suspension, which is why period reviewers frequently compared its handling to the BMW 1600/2002.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.

The GS/E coupe earned the nickname "German Charger" for its long hood, short deck stance borrowed from Detroit muscle cars.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
