FactToyota's first Coaster could hit 110 km/h despite hauling 26 passengers on a 98 PS engine.
The Toyota Coaster was introduced in February 1969 as a 17-passenger minibus in 22- and 26-seat models on the Dyna's U platform, with the 1,994 cc (2.0 L) 5R petrol engine and the 2,481 cc (2.5 L) 2J diesel and a four-speed column-shift manual (model codes RU18 and JU18); an early RU19 with the 98 PS engine could reach 110 km/h (68 mph). In February 1972 the 2J was replaced by the 2,997 cc (3.0 L) B diesel with a five-speed manual (RU19 and BU19); in August 1977 the platform code changed to the B series, the 2,189 cc (2.2 L) 20R petrol (RB11) and the 3,168 cc (3.2 L) 2B diesel (B10) were introduced and 21- and 25-seat and high-roof models were added; in November 1979 gearboxes became floor-shifted and the 5R was dropped; and in August 1980 the 2,366 cc (2.4 L) 22R petrol arrived on the RB13. In Japan the Coaster is sold exclusively at Toyota Store dealerships.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

The current Coaster was the first vehicle fully redesigned under Toyota's newly created Commercial Vehicle company.

From 1997 this Coaster was offered as a series hybrid: its 1.5-litre engine only generated electricity, and an electric motor drove the bus.

This Coaster generation swapped a two-piece folding bus door for a single-piece unit, part of a 1982 wraparound-windscreen redesign.
