The current Coaster was the first vehicle fully redesigned under Toyota's newly created Commercial Vehicle company.
From 1997 this Coaster was offered as a series hybrid: its 1.5-litre engine only generated electricity, and an electric motor drove the bus.
This Coaster generation swapped a two-piece folding bus door for a single-piece unit, part of a 1982 wraparound-windscreen redesign.
Toyota's first Coaster could hit 110 km/h despite hauling 26 passengers on a 98 PS engine.
