The second-generation Avensis was launched in February 2003 in an all-new format, offering more driver involvement and visual appeal, and was launched in Japan in saloon and estate form in October 2003, replacing the V50 series Vista and Vista Ardeo. Like the Echo/Yaris and Corolla, it was penned by the company's design studio in France, and production officially began on 6 January 2003. After the withdrawal of the Camry in 2004, the Avensis became the largest Toyota saloon sold in Western Europe. In the 2004 European Car of the Year contest it came in fourth, and it won the 2004 Semperit Irish Car of the Year.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

This humble family sedan became the literal template for British Touring Car racing — the NGTC cost-cutting rules were prototyped around the Avensis.

The 2003 Avensis didn't just pass Euro NCAP's tougher new crash test, it aced it: the first Japanese car to score five stars, and the highest-rated car NCAP had tested yet.

In Greece, early Avensis taxis were badged 'Toyota Corona' instead — the old Corona name was so tied to taxis there that Toyota kept using it until the 2000 facelift.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.

The GS/E coupe earned the nickname "German Charger" for its long hood, short deck stance borrowed from Detroit muscle cars.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
