FactThe FJ's design was first previewed by an electric concept, the Compact Cruiser EV of December 2021.
The Land Cruiser FJ (J240) is a retro-styled compact body-on-frame SUV, the smallest of the Land Cruiser range, built in Thailand since February 2026. Its "FJ" name is a backronym for "Freedom & Joy" and a nod to the FJ40 Land Cruiser. First teased in August 2023, it debuted at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show and uses the IMV platform shared with the Hilux. It has a 2.7-litre 2TR-FE petrol four, a 6-speed automatic and part-time four-wheel drive, and is sold in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, not North America or Europe.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.
