FactAmericans never drove this Prado; they got the same truck badged as the Lexus GX 460.
The fourth-generation Land Cruiser Prado was built from October 2009 to October 2023 in three-door and five-door forms, and was sold in the United States as the Lexus GX 460. Depending on the market it carries its spare wheel under the floor or on the rear door. In June 2015 the 4.0-litre V6 gained dual VVT-i and the diesel was replaced by the 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV, both paired with a six-speed automatic; China received a 3.5-litre V6 instead. The diesel was uprated again in 2020, and a second facelift arrived in September 2017.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

The J120 was the first Prado generation sold in the United States as the Lexus GX, badged as the GX 470.

Toyota built a factory Prado with all four wheels replaced by rubber snow tracks — and because it didn't change how you drove it, you could legally pilot this tank-tracked SUV on an ordinary license.

IIHS only crash-tests the driver's corner; tested on the passenger side instead, the CX-5 showed far worse intrusion.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.

Subaru built a 2.5XT for the National Ski Patrol with a diamond-plate floor, a 9,500-pound winch and a toboggan on the roof.

The L405 was the first Range Rover with a fully aluminum monocoque body, cutting up to 420 kg from the outgoing steel-bodied L322.
