FactOnly 133 Mega Cruisers ever reached civilian hands, and about 30 of Toyota's military version shipped to Ukraine in 2026.
The Toyota Mega Cruiser, introduced in 1995 and sold exclusively in Japan at Toyota Store dealers, is the largest four-wheel-drive vehicle Toyota has built — a heavy-duty full-size SUV whose design resembles the Humvee and Hummer H1, originally designed for military use as the Japan Self Defense Forces' High Mobility Vehicle (BXD10, including a Type 93 surface-to-air missile launcher variant) and also used by prefectural police, the Japan Automobile Federation and fire/rescue; the civilian BXD20 came with a standard low roof or an optional high roof. A prototype was shown at the 30th Tokyo Motor Show in October 1993, production began in late 1995 at Gifu Auto Body with sales in 1996, and production was halted in 2001 (sales officially ended in 2002) because of strict vehicle taxes and Japan's narrow streets, with some 3,000 built and only 133 sold to civilians (about 12 in left-hand drive; some grey-imported overseas). Its 4.1-litre 15B-FTE turbo-diesel inline-four makes 114 kW (153 hp) and 382 N·m (282 lb·ft) at 1,800 rpm through a four-speed Aisin A443F automatic and a two-speed transfer case, with front, centre and rear differential locks, four-wheel steering, an optional central tyre pressure system, a 600 kg load capacity and seats for two in front and four at the rear; it was meant to test designs for mass-produced SUVs like the Land Cruiser but was financially unsuccessful for Toyota, and 30 Mega Cruiser HMVs were shipped to Ukraine in 2026.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

IIHS only crash-tests the driver's corner; tested on the passenger side instead, the CX-5 showed far worse intrusion.

Despite launching from a standing start in late 2025, the i60 topped GAC Aion's own sales chart through January's seasonal slowdown.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.

Subaru built a 2.5XT for the National Ski Patrol with a diamond-plate floor, a 9,500-pound winch and a toboggan on the roof.

The L405 was the first Range Rover with a fully aluminum monocoque body, cutting up to 420 kg from the outgoing steel-bodied L322.

Rear passengers get a 17.3-inch screen that extends from the roof, and a lidar sensor sits in the front of the roof.

Its range-extender variant is rated for 1,200 km on a tank and charge, over three times the car's electric-only range.
