The Sumo Spacio, launched in 2000 as a cheaper, no-frills version of the Sumo, introduced a new 2,956 cc direct-injection naturally aspirated diesel (Tata 4SP, 65 horsepower) from the light commercial Tata 407, on a longer wheelbase with a different transmission, rear axle and tyres for better fuel economy; it had round headlamps and there was a soft-top Spacio ST (also 4WD) for rural markets. The Spacio Gold Plus of early 2007 got the turbocharged 3.0 4SP-family engine with 70 horsepower at 3,000 rpm and 223 Nm at 2,200 rpm. The Sumo Victa, launched on 7 July 2004 as a facelift of the Spacio, added a tachometer, multifunction instrument panel, power steering, power windows and keyless entry; the Victa Turbo DI of later 2007 carried the powertrain over, with the spare wheel moved under the body and 7- and 9-seat variants. Length 4,450 mm (175.2 in), width 1,756 mm (69.1 in), height 1,906 mm (75.0 in).

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

The Sumo Gold's big update wasn't cosmetic — it brought common-rail direct injection to Tata's old SUV for the first time, replacing a non-common-rail diesel that had powered it for years.

Late in its life, the Sumo Victa moved its spare wheel off the tailgate and tucked it under the vehicle instead — an unusual relocation most cars never bother making.

Despite the name, the Sumo has nothing to do with wrestling — it's named for Sumant Moolgaokar, a former Tata Motors managing director.
