FactSolterra means sun and earth in Latin, for a car built on the same line as the Toyota it copies.
The Solterra is Subaru's rebadged version of the Toyota bZ4X, built on the e-TNGA platform that Subaru calls the e-Subaru Global Platform; its name comes from the Latin words for sun and earth. It went on sale in mid-2022 in Japan, the US, Canada, Europe and China, with minor design changes such as regen paddles, a squared steering wheel and different lights. A facelift unveiled at the April 2025 New York Auto Show for the 2026 model year brought a new front end, a 74.7 kWh battery with 25 percent more range, 233 hp from stronger motors, and a new XT trim with 338 hp.
