FactSubaru built the R1 shorter than kei regulations allowed, deliberately leaving length on the table for a car sold as a couple's second ride.
The Subaru R1 is a kei car manufactured by Subaru from 2005 to 2010, entering production on January 4, 2005 as a two-door version of the Subaru R2 with a shorter body and wheelbase. It is unusual in not using up the maximum length allowed by the kei car regulations, and it uses a 658 cc Subaru EN engine in three versions: the I with the EN07U SOHC, the R with the EN07D DOHC, and the STi with an EN07X supercharged and intercooled engine, with an iCVT transmission. It is marketed as a personal car and as a middle-aged couple's second car, with a combination of leather and Alcantara seating available.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Subaru's tiny two-door R1 kei car got the full STI treatment: a supercharged, intercooled 658cc engine squeezing out roughly 63 hp from an engine smaller than a motorcycle's.
