FactŠkoda wanted a front-drive successor in the 1970s but Moscow refused the licence, so this rear-engined design ran until 1990.
A family of rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive small family cars built by AZNP in Mladá Boleslav from August 1976 to 1990: the 105 and 120 (Type 742), the 125 late in the run, the 130 of 1984, and the final 135/136 (Type 746) of April 1987 with the Favorit's 1289 cc engine. A total of 2,013,745 saloons were built. Škoda had wanted a front-engined front-drive successor to the S100/110 but was refused a licence in Moscow and lacked funds, so it updated the old car under the skin, with a front-mounted radiator and thermostatic fan, a dashboard heater, a fuel tank under the rear seat and a side-hinged front bootlid that opens like a concert piano lid. Suspension is independent at the front with a swing-axle rear (a semi-trailing-arm rear from the Garde coupé of November 1981, used on the 130). In the UK it was sold as the Estelle (Super Estelle 1978–1984, Estelle Two from 1984), with 120,105 sold from May 1977 to March 1990, and in France as the 1050 because Peugeot had trademarked "105". The September 1983 facelift brought rectangular headlamps, rubber bumpers and rack-and-pinion steering; Autocar and Motor said the 136 Rapid "handles like a Porsche 911". It was the last mass-produced rear-engined small family car in Europe; the Favorit replaced it, and the last 120 L and 125 L were built in January 1990.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

It briefly served as senior sibling to Marquette, a GM companion brand cancelled after just one year.

Nissan hired former BMW engineers to help develop the 510's suspension, which is why period reviewers frequently compared its handling to the BMW 1600/2002.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.

The GS/E coupe earned the nickname "German Charger" for its long hood, short deck stance borrowed from Detroit muscle cars.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
