The saloon, coupé and estate version of the Ibiza Mk2, drawn by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign on the Volkswagen Group A03 platform, presented at the 1993 Frankfurt Motor Show and launched that summer. It was sold as the Volkswagen Polo Classic (saloon and estate) in Europe, Argentina, the Philippines and South Africa, the Volkswagen Derby in Mexico, the Citi Golf in China (FAW-VW, 1994-2001) and the SEAT Leon in Taiwan, and built at Martorell and Poznań. In 1996 a coupé (Córdoba SX) and estate (Córdoba Vario) joined it; the 1999 facelift (6K2) changed bumpers, lights and the interior and replaced the 150 PS 16-valve ABF with a 1.8-litre 156 PS turbo 20-valve engine in the Cupra range. Boot space is 455 litres, extendable to 762. The Córdoba WRC rally car ran in the World Rally Championship from 1998 to 2000 (three podiums, a 2.0-litre turbo). The Ibiza ST and Toledo replaced it.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

SEAT killed the Córdoba in Europe, but Mexico kept building it and even gave it a facelift no other market ever got.

With the 1999 facelift the Córdoba lost its 16-valve ABF engine for a 156 PS turbocharged 1.8-litre 20-valve unit, which joined the Cupra range.

The humble Córdoba SX shared its hottest engine with genuine performance icons — the same 2.0-litre ABF unit also powered the Mk3 Golf GTI and the first Ibiza Cupra.

It briefly served as senior sibling to Marquette, a GM companion brand cancelled after just one year.

Nissan hired former BMW engineers to help develop the 510's suspension, which is why period reviewers frequently compared its handling to the BMW 1600/2002.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

The G80 Sport brought a 370 PS twin-turbo 3.3 V6, a mesh grille and copper-tinted chrome with copper stitching to match.

The Vigor was sold only with a five-cylinder engine, an unusual configuration Honda used to fit a longer engine transversely under a short hood.

The GS/E coupe earned the nickname "German Charger" for its long hood, short deck stance borrowed from Detroit muscle cars.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
