FactRivian built the R2 to be its first model ever sold outside the US and Canada.
The Rivian R2 is a two-row, five-seat battery-electric mid-size SUV, announced on March 7, 2024 as a smaller, cheaper alternative to the R1S, and built in Normal, Illinois since April 2026 as a 2027 model. It sits on Rivian's Midsize Platform with an 87.9 kWh (usable) battery of LG 4695 cells and charges at up to 210 kW through a NACS port. The Performance Launch Edition, with front and rear motors totalling 656 hp, came first in spring 2026, followed by the dual-motor Premium; single-motor rear-drive versions are due in 2027. It is planned to be Rivian's first model sold outside the United States and Canada.

Owning one

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Its range-extender variant is rated for 1,200 km on a tank and charge, over three times the car's electric-only range.
