In 1971 Pontiac moved the Ventura name to its new X-body compact, the Ventura II (Pontiac's version of the Chevrolet Nova; the "II" suffix was dropped after 1972 and the Phoenix name replaced Ventura in 1978), offered as a two-door coupe, three-door hatchback (from 1973) and four-door sedan. Engines for the 1971 model year were a 250 cu in six or a 307 cu in V8 (only the 307 with the Sprint option); for 1972 a Pontiac-built 350 cu in V8 with a two-barrel carburetor was added and became the base V8 for 1973 and 1974, the 1975 Ventura could be optioned with a Buick 350 V8, 1976 saw the Oldsmobile 260 V8, and for 1977 the Chevy 250 six was replaced by Buick's 231 cu in V6 as the base engine, with the Chevrolet 305, the 301 V8 and an optional 2.5 L Iron Duke four. Notable versions: the Ventura Sprint option (1971–1975), the limited Ventura SD (about 250 built in mid-1972 for the Southern California market), the Custom series (1973), the Ventura SJ (1975), and the 1974 GTO package (a 350 cu in four-barrel engine, dropped in 1975), which the catalogue covers under the GTO model. Wheelbase 110.8 in, length 194.5 in, width 72.4 in, height 52.5 in. Under 700 units were built in 1976 with the 5-speed manual and the 260 V8.

A Trabant 601 won its class at the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally, with a second 601 right behind it in second.

The 600 was a stopgap: the P50's body over the 601's mechanicals, and for a while its estate was built alongside the new 601 saloon.

This DeVille/Fleetwood was the first production car anywhere to mount its V8 sideways, Cadillac's front-drive gamble on the new C-body.
