The Dodge Ramcharger is a large sport utility vehicle built by Dodge from 1974 to 1993 on a shortened-wheelbase version (9 inches shorter) of the Dodge D series / Ram pickup chassis (Chrysler AD platform); a Plymouth version, the Plymouth Trail Duster, was offered from 1974 to 1981 and was Plymouth's only SUV. During development it was known as the "Rhino". It was originally available in four-wheel drive only, with a rear-wheel-drive-only version from 1975; the 1974–1980 models came without a roof, with a dealer-installed fabric top, or an optional removable steel roof with a flip-up rear tailgate window (early 1974 models had door pillars attached to the removable roof and "half doors" until June 10, 1974). Marketed as a basic utility vehicle, only the driver's seat was standard equipment, with the passenger seat optional up to 1976. The standard engine was the 225 cu in (3.7 L) Slant Six, with 318 and 360 cu in "LA" small-block V8s and the big-block 400 and 440 cu in "B" and "RB" wedge V8s; the 360 was rated 175 hp in 1978 and 160 hp in 1979. The Ramcharger placed first in the 1975 Sno*Drift rally; it competed with the Chevrolet K5 Blazer and the 1978–1996 Ford Bronco.

For its entire run the Trail Duster had a removable top -- only in its very last year, 1981, was it forced onto the Ram's fixed welded steel roof, right before Plymouth killed it off.
