Launched as the replacement for the Peugeot 307 in most international markets, the first-generation 308 (project T7) was based upon the old 307's chassis but with new bodywork and slightly longer and wider; it has a drag coefficient of 0.29 and a five-star Euro NCAP rating, and was awarded the Goldene Lenkrad in Germany in November 2007. It was built at Mulhouse and Sochaux in France, and in Kaluga, Russia, from 2010 and El Palomar, Argentina, from 2011, where the first generation kept being produced until 2021. The 308 SW estate was shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2008, and the 308 CC retractable-hardtop cabriolet replaced the 307 CC in February 2009. In May 2010 Peugeot announced the return of a GTi, badged GT in the United Kingdom, with a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine of 200 bhp. A facelift was released in May 2011, alongside the 308 e-HDi micro-hybrid, and during its production the 308 HDi held the Guinness world record as the most fuel efficient mainstream car.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

This 308 made quiet history: it's the very first Peugeot ever built wearing the brand's redesigned lion logo.

The T9's new EMP2 platform did something cars rarely do on a redesign: it shed 140kg against the old 308 — about the weight of an extra passenger, gone.

Peugeot never re-engineered the 308's wiper sweep for right-hand drive — so in the UK and Australia, the driver's own side of the windscreen was the one left with an unwiped patch.

Japan was a minor market for the Swift: when it passed 2 million sales in 2011, about 39% were in India and 27% in Europe, against roughly 15% at home.

To adapt the Horizon for America, Chrysler bought nearly 100 Volkswagen Rabbits purely to reverse engineer them.

The Mk3 Focus RS's AWD system could send 100 percent of engine power to the rear wheels alone — built not in Ford's home country, but at the Saarlouis plant in Germany.

In June 2003, a Mégane II became the subject of the first ever live televised crash test with a real human driver at the wheel instead of a dummy — filmed by Top Gear.

This Wagon R redesigned its rear doors specifically to kill off the D-pillar — bigger doors with built-in quarter glass solved what earlier generations needed a whole extra pillar for.

The BX was the UK's best-selling diesel car for four years from 1987, and 2,315,739 were built in all.

Six months before Suzuki retired the Fronte name for good, the CN11S's 796cc version was already being built in China under a completely different name: the Anchi 6330.

Built to use up Chrysler-Simca's parts bin, it took its engine and gearbox straight from the front-wheel-drive Simca 1100 but mounted them amidships instead.
