Debuted at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show on GM's Delta II platform and went on sale in November 2009 as a 2010 model (the 2009 model year was skipped). It took most of its styling from the new Insignia and has a torsion-beam rear suspension with a Watt's link; officially "Astra J" rather than "I" to avoid confusing the letter with the number 1. Full production started at Ellesmere Port at the end of September 2009. A facelift was announced in June 2012 for the 2013 model year, the 195 PS 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI from the Insignia arrived in autumn 2012 and a 170 PS 1.6 turbo SIDI in early 2013. In February 2014 Opel introduced its all-new 1.6 CDTI "whisper diesel". The three-door GTC (2015–2018 as its own model) and a rare saloon followed, and the car was sold as the Buick Verano in North America and the Vauxhall Astra in the UK.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

The Astra L was the first Astra ever developed outside GM ownership - built under PSA/Stellantis, it became the first Astra offered as a hybrid.

The Astra K shrank 5cm on the outside and shed up to 200kg versus the J it replaced, yet Opel claimed it was roomier inside than ever.

Fresh off its 2012 launch, the new J-generation Astra VXR (sold as the OPC in mainland Europe) was named Best Sporting Car at the Scottish Car of the Year Awards that October.

This Astra was never meant to be called J — internally it was the ninth-letter "Astra I," renamed at the last minute so nobody would misread the badge as the number 1.

Down under, this Astra OPC wore a different badge entirely: Holden Special Vehicles sold it as the HSV VXR until late 2009.

The Astra H beat every other mainstream European car to digital radio — plus segment firsts in electronically controlled chassis (IDS+) and adaptive headlights that steer into corners.

The Astra G's coupe and cabrio weren't built by Opel at all; Bertone in Italy designed and assembled them.

South Africa's turbocharged Astra 200tS was quick enough to beat the contemporary BMW M3 in a quarter-mile drag race.

Japan was a minor market for the Swift: when it passed 2 million sales in 2011, about 39% were in India and 27% in Europe, against roughly 15% at home.

To adapt the Horizon for America, Chrysler bought nearly 100 Volkswagen Rabbits purely to reverse engineer them.

The Mk3 Focus RS's AWD system could send 100 percent of engine power to the rear wheels alone — built not in Ford's home country, but at the Saarlouis plant in Germany.

In June 2003, a Mégane II became the subject of the first ever live televised crash test with a real human driver at the wheel instead of a dummy — filmed by Top Gear.

This Wagon R redesigned its rear doors specifically to kill off the D-pillar — bigger doors with built-in quarter glass solved what earlier generations needed a whole extra pillar for.

The BX was the UK's best-selling diesel car for four years from 1987, and 2,315,739 were built in all.

Six months before Suzuki retired the Fronte name for good, the CN11S's 796cc version was already being built in China under a completely different name: the Anchi 6330.

Built to use up Chrysler-Simca's parts bin, it took its engine and gearbox straight from the front-wheel-drive Simca 1100 but mounted them amidships instead.
