FactThis ASX is basically an Outlander that went on a diet: Mitsubishi reused the longer SUV's platform and components but trimmed seating down to five, reviving an idea the brand had tried once before.
The Mitsubishi ASX (Active Sports Crossover) is a subcompact crossover SUV manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors, positioned at introduction below the Outlander until the Eclipse Cross filled the gap in 2017, and built on the GS platform closely shared with the Lancer and Outlander. The first generation was first released in the Japanese domestic market on 17 February 2010 as the Mitsubishi RVR, a nameplate only used in Japan, South Korea and Canada; it is sold as the ASX in most markets and as the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport in the United States, Argentina, Brazil and Indonesia, and was also badged Peugeot 4008 and Citroën C4 Aircross from 2012 to 2017. Its design was previewed by the Concept-cX shown at the 62nd Frankfurt Motor Show in July 2007, and it is a return to offering the platform used for the longer Outlander with reduced seating capacity for five. The European ASX was exhibited at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010, and between 2012 and 2015 production of the Outlander Sport also began at Mitsubishi's Illinois plant. The first facelift was revealed in April 2012 and the second in November 2015 at the Los Angeles Auto Show with the "Dynamic Shield" front design. The second-generation ASX for Europe is a rebadged Renault Captur, sold from March 2023.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.
