The GT R is the high-performance AMG GT, introduced at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 24 June 2016 with deliveries from 2017; it was Formula One's safety car from 2018 to 2021. Over the GT C it adds manually adjustable coilovers, an active underbody fairing, an adjustable rear wing and nine-mode traction control, with styling closer to the AMG GT3 race car. The track-focused GT R Pro, shown at the 2018 Los Angeles show and limited to 750 cars, added adjustable coilovers, carbon aero, standard carbon-ceramic brakes and an optional roll cage. A GT R roadster limited to 750 units followed in 2019.

The GT 63 Pro becomes Formula One's actual safety car from the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, taking over from the old Black Series.

It spawned a track-only offspring, the GT Track Series, built to mark AMG's 55th birthday and limited to 55 cars.

In November 2020 the AMG GT Black Series lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:43.616 — at the time, the fastest lap ever recorded there by any road-legal production car.

AMG's second ground-up car kept the SLS's long hood and gullwing-era proportions, but swapped out the gullwing doors entirely.

The CTR Anniversary looks like a 911 but Ruf built its carbon monocoque from scratch, no Porsche body underneath.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
