FactThe CX-50 brought Mazda back to building cars in the US after a ten-year gap, at a plant it shares with Toyota in Alabama.
The CX-50 is a compact crossover built since January 2022 for the 2023 model year, for North America and China, at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Alabama, which marked Mazda's return to US production after ten years; Changan Mazda has built it in China since March 2023. It shares the transverse platform of the fourth-generation Mazda3 and CX-30 and sits alongside the slightly smaller CX-5, with squarer styling, more body cladding and a lower roof. Mazda's i-Activ all-wheel drive is standard, with 2.5-litre petrol and turbo engines on a 6-speed automatic, a Toyota-sourced hybrid from the 2025 model year, and a 2.0-litre in China.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.
