FactMazda dealers logged over 12,000 orders within weeks of this SUV's 2017 reveal, its Biante and Premacy replacement.
The Mazda CX-8 (model code KG) is a mid-size crossover SUV produced since December 2017 in Japan (until December 2023) and since 2019 in Southeast Asia, related to the CX-5 (KF) and CX-9 (TC): a three-row version of the CX-5 that resembles the second-generation CX-9 and shares its tail lights, but is 17 cm (6.7 in) shorter and 13 cm (5.1 in) narrower to conform to Japanese conditions. First unveiled on 14 September 2017, it was Mazda's flagship SUV in Japan, where the larger export-only CX-9 is not sold, and the only three-row vehicle Mazda still offered there after the Biante and Premacy minivans were discontinued; Mazda dealers received over 12,000 orders within a few weeks. It seats seven (second-row bench) or six (second-row captain seats with a centre console), with 209 litres (7.38 cu ft) of luggage space behind the third row. It was first offered only with a 2.2-litre Skyactiv-D diesel; a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G from the CX-5 and a turbocharged version of that engine from the CX-9 were added in 2018 (November 2018 in Japan), driving through a 6-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic. Japan's November 2022 refresh added the Grand Journey (silver bash plates, black mirror shells) and Sports Appearance (black grille, body cladding and wheels) design schemes. It was assembled in Hiroshima (Ujina Plant No. 2), Nanjing (Changan Mazda), Kulim, Malaysia (Inokom) and Chu Lai, Vietnam (THACO); Japanese production ended at the end of 2023, with the CX-80 as the replacement in Japan, Australia and New Zealand, while Malaysian production continues. About 25,000 were sold in Australia from its July 2018 launch.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

IIHS only crash-tests the driver's corner; tested on the passenger side instead, the CX-5 showed far worse intrusion.

Despite launching from a standing start in late 2025, the i60 topped GAC Aion's own sales chart through January's seasonal slowdown.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.

Subaru built a 2.5XT for the National Ski Patrol with a diamond-plate floor, a 9,500-pound winch and a toboggan on the roof.

The L405 was the first Range Rover with a fully aluminum monocoque body, cutting up to 420 kg from the outgoing steel-bodied L322.

Rear passengers get a 17.3-inch screen that extends from the roof, and a lidar sensor sits in the front of the roof.

Its range-extender variant is rated for 1,200 km on a tank and charge, over three times the car's electric-only range.
