The first-generation Mazda2, sold in Japan as the Demio, was developed on Ford's B3 platform shared with the fifth-generation Fiesta, under chief engineer Kiyoshi Fujiwara. It was built in Hiroshima and, for Europe from January 2003, at Ford's Valencia plant. Japanese cars used 1.3 and 1.5-litre Z-family engines and offered an e-4WD system that drives the rear wheels electrically as a traction aid; Europe had Ford-derived 1.25, 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol engines and a 1.4 diesel. The Demio was facelifted on 13 April 2005, and the upmarket Verisa was derived from it.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.
