The second-generation Li L9 is a range-extended full-size SUV built in Changzhou and Kostanay, unveiled on February 6, 2026 and launched in China on 15 May 2026, alongside a higher-end L9 Livis version. It is larger in every dimension than its predecessor and has a fully active 800V suspension without anti-roll bars, steer-by-wire and four-wheel steering. Its new 1.5-litre turbocharged range extender produces 150 hp and charges a 72.7 kWh NMC battery that supports 420 kW charging.

Li Auto claims this three-row range-extender SUV can go 817 miles combined — roughly double what most all-electric SUVs manage, with the gas engine only ever recharging the battery, never touching the wheels.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.

The L405 was the first Range Rover with a fully aluminum monocoque body, cutting up to 420 kg from the outgoing steel-bodied L322.

Rear passengers get a 17.3-inch screen that extends from the roof, and a lidar sensor sits in the front of the roof.

Its range-extender variant is rated for 1,200 km on a tank and charge, over three times the car's electric-only range.
