The Leapmotor C16, previewed at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2024, is the third and largest SUV in Leapmotor's line-up, a full-size crossover on the C10's LEAP 3.0 platform offered as a pure EV or, with a 1.5-litre H15R four acting solely as a generator, a plug-in series-hybrid (EREV). The EV motor makes 160 kW (218 PS, 215 hp) or, in a higher state, 170 kW (231 PS, 228 hp); EV battery packs run 74.9 or 81.9 kWh LFP (28.4 kWh LFP for the EREV) for up to 630 km CLTC range. EV rear-motor, rear-wheel drive; wheelbase 2,825 mm (111.2 in), length 4,915 mm (193.5 in), width 1,905 mm (75.0 in), height 1,770 mm (69.7 in), curb weight 2,125-2,195 kg (4,685-4,839 lb). The page names this an EREV/series-hybrid system rather than using the literal phrase "plug-in hybrid" for its combustion variant, so fuel_type is left unset on that trim; the EV trim below is fully electric.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.

Its range-extender variant is rated for 1,200 km on a tank and charge, over three times the car's electric-only range.
