FactBuilt to replace the body-on-frame Freelander, the Discovery Sport was the first Discovery with unibody construction.
The Discovery Sport (L550) is a compact luxury crossover introduced in late 2014 to replace the Freelander, and Land Rover's best-selling model since 2017. It was the first Discovery with a unibody, offered with an optional seven-seat layout, and is built at Halewood and in China, Brazil and India. Ford EcoBoost petrol and Duratorq diesel engines were replaced by JLR's 2.0-litre Ingenium fours from late 2015. A facelift revealed on 21 May 2019 moved it to the Premium Transverse Architecture shared with the Evoque and E-Pace, with mild hybrids and a P300e plug-in hybrid.

Despite launching from a standing start in late 2025, the i60 topped GAC Aion's own sales chart through January's seasonal slowdown.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.
