The second-generation Jeep Liberty (KK), also sold as the Jeep Cherokee outside North America, was built from 2007 until 16 August 2012 for the 2008 to 2012 model years. Related to the Dodge Nitro, it took a boxier look than the KJ and offered rear- or four-wheel drive. Engines were the 3.7 litre PowerTech V6 and a 2.8 litre VM Motori CRD turbo-diesel, with four- and five-speed automatics or a six-speed manual.

The Liberty quietly broke two firsts for Jeep: the brand's first vehicle with rack-and-pinion steering, and its first independent front suspension since the 1963-65 Wagoneer.

Chrysler dropped the Liberty's name entirely outside North America, selling the same truck as a Jeep Cherokee instead.
