The Isuzu MU-X ("Multi Utility – eXtreme"), a body-on-frame mid-size SUV based on the D-Max, had its world premiere in Thailand on 31 October 2013 and went on sale on 6 November (December in Australia). A product of the General Motors-Isuzu collaboration, it shares its platform with the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Holden Colorado (the Trailblazer released first by agreement with GM), was shown at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show but is not sold in Japan, and has been sold in Thailand, Australia, Paraguay, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei (until 2016), Vietnam, China (from May 2015, built by Jiangxi Isuzu) and India. Engines are the 2.5-litre 4JK1-TCX (134 hp) and 3.0-litre 4JJ1-TCX (161 hp) turbodiesels, joined in 2016 by a 1.9-litre RZ4E-TC (148 hp), with 5- or 6-speed manuals or automatics, rear- or four-wheel drive, and in China a 2.0-litre Ford EcoBoost turbo petrol. In the Philippines it replaced the Alterra on 9 September 2014 with only the 2.5 at first because of fuel quality concerns, and got a Euro II 3.0-litre 4JJ1-TC in October 2015. The 2017 facelift (revealed 14 February, debuted 4 March 2017) added integrated LED front and tail lights, softer materials, a two-tone interior and better NVH.

This MU-X shares its bones with an unlikely relative: it rides on the same platform as the current Isuzu D-Max, which is itself closely related to the Mazda BT-50.

The MU-X wasn't purely an Isuzu design — it's a GM/Isuzu joint platform shared with the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Holden Colorado, and Isuzu's deal with GM meant the Trailblazer had to launch first.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.
