Premiered in Thailand in 2002, chosen because GM-Isuzu had decided to close their small-truck plant in Japan and move the joint operation there; the successor to the Faster/KB, sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Colorado, with Spark (single cab), SpaceCab (extended) and Cab4 (double cab) bodies and 4x4 "Rodeo" and lifted 4x2 "Hi-Lander" trims. It launched with the 3.0 4JH1-T and 2.5 4JA1-T; the DDi iTEQ common-rail family began in October 2004 with the 3.0 4JJ1-TC (146 PS), followed by the 2.5 4JK1-TC (116 PS) in early 2005 and, in the third quarter of 2006, the variable-geometry (VGS) 4JJ1-TCX with a new MaxMatic-III automatic. In Australia and New Zealand it was the third-generation Holden Rodeo (2003–2008), then the Holden Colorado (with a 2.4 four, the 211 hp 3.6 Alloytec V6 and the 3.0 diesel), while the Isuzu-badged D-Max launched there in October 2008. Also sold as the Chevrolet LUV D-Max and T-Series, and built in China by Great Wall and Foday.

Owning one
An estimate, for the 2.5 4JA1-T turbodiesel trim: fuel on its EPA figure and a dated national price, upkeep on a per-mile average for the kind of car it is.

Pickups have always struggled in crash testing — the third-gen D-Max broke that pattern, becoming the first pickup truck ever to score five stars under Euro NCAP.

The second-generation D-Max's new ladder frame, nicknamed 'i-GRIP,' is 42% stronger than the truck it replaced, with a wheelbase stretched 45mm longer across every body style.

Rivals

The GMT400 split the twins for good: 1988 was the year "C/K" became Chevrolet-only badging, while GMC's version of the very same truck became the Sierra.

GMC found 10 extra horsepower in the Sierra All Terrain X's 5.3L V8 with nothing more than a performance exhaust, no other changes needed to go from 355 to 365 hp.

This Sierra kept rolling off the line for a full extra year after its replacement arrived - badged "Classic" in 2007 just to tell the two generations apart on dealer lots.

When this GMT900 Sierra launched for 2007, GM kept selling the outgoing truck alongside it, badged "Classic," so buyers could choose old or new side by side on the same lot.

Toyota showed it as the T150 until Ford sued over the likeness to the F-150, and the production truck was renamed Tundra.

A Louisiana owner put over a million miles on his 2007 Tundra in eight years; Toyota gave him a new truck and took his apart to study it.

Toyota's Texas Tundra plant sits on land bought from the state's oldest working cattle ranch, and the 1794 Edition is named for the year that ranch was founded.

Its launch colours had pun names such as "Anti-Establish Mint" and "Freudian Gilt", sent to Lee Iacocca by a friend.
