FactHyundai named the Terracan after the Tarascan empire of west-central Mexico, then built the thing on a Mitsubishi Pajero chassis.
The Hyundai Terracan is a mid-size SUV produced by Hyundai from 2001 to 2007 (in China by Hawtai until 2011; in India 2003–2007), previewed by the Hyundai Highland concept and built on a chassis derived from the second-generation Mitsubishi Pajero, related also to the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Galloper. The name derives from Tarascan, a Mesoamerican empire in west central Mexico, and it was replaced by the Veracruz. At launch in 2001 it was offered with three engines: a 3.5 litre Sigma V6 gasoline, a 2.5 litre diesel licensed from Mitsubishi (D4BF, 4D56) and a more fuel-efficient 2.9 litre J-Series diesel offered in Europe, Australia and New Zealand (a 2.4 L 4G64 in China); transmissions were a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. 2002 changed only colours and 2005 brought a light facelift; Australian specification cars came in base and Highlander trims with leather and climate control standard on the Highlander.

Owning one
An estimate, for the Terracan 2.5 D4BF turbodiesel four trim: fuel on its EPA figure and a dated national price, upkeep on a per-mile average for the kind of car it is.

IIHS only crash-tests the driver's corner; tested on the passenger side instead, the CX-5 showed far worse intrusion.

Despite launching from a standing start in late 2025, the i60 topped GAC Aion's own sales chart through January's seasonal slowdown.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.

Rear passengers get a 17.3-inch screen that extends from the roof, and a lidar sensor sits in the front of the roof.

Its range-extender variant is rated for 1,200 km on a tank and charge, over three times the car's electric-only range.
