FactThe civilian Hummer exists largely because of one Hollywood star — Arnold Schwarzenegger was so taken with the military Humvee that he personally pushed AM General to sell a road-going version.
The Hummer H1, the civilian version of AM General's military M998 Humvee and the first Hummer model (11,818 built, 1992-2006, built at Mishawaka, Indiana), was offered across its life with several V8 engine options — a 5.7 L gas L05, and progressively larger Detroit Diesel/Duramax diesels up to 6.6 L — through 3- to 5-speed automatics, front-mid engine, four-wheel drive, on a shared 130 in (3,302 mm) wheelbase chassis, 184.5 in (4,686 mm) long and 86.5 in (2,197 mm) wide. The final "H1 Alpha" update (production launched fall 2004, ending June 2006) fitted a re-engineered 6.6 L Duramax "GMT560" making a real 300 hp (220 kW) and 520 lb-ft — the only H1 engine option with a stated output; the others give no horsepower figure on the page. (Height varied by year and body style across a 75-79 in range, so not cited here.)

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.
