The Daihatsu Rugger is an off-road vehicle built from 1984 to 2002, called the Rocky in most export markets and the Fourtrak in the United Kingdom (so often known by its model designation, F70 for the diesels or F80 for the petrols); in Japan and the US the Rocky name belongs to the smaller F300 series. The F70/F80 is dimensionally close to the short-wheelbase Isuzu Trooper, Land Cruiser, Pajero and Patrol but seats five rather than four, with ladder-frame construction, leaf-sprung live axles and a transfer case with five extra low gears; the driver had to get out and lock the hubs to select 4WD until automatic locking hubs arrived in 1991. The first model replaced the F10/F20/F50/F60 Taft, in short-wheelbase soft-top or removable-hardtop form (F70/F80), a long-wheelbase version with a fibreglass top (F75/F85, stretched by 325 mm), the eight-seat Rugger Wagon and an F77 pickup. It had a Toyota 2.0-litre 3Y petrol (65 kW / 87 hp, single carburettor, SOHC) and two 2.8-litre overhead-valve diesels — naturally aspirated (54 kW / 72 hp) and, from early 1985, turbocharged (65 kW / 87 hp), later intercooled to 75 kW (101 hp) DIN or 85 kW (114 hp) JIS; in 1989 the DL diesel gained a timing belt and rectangular headlamps. A Toyota 2L-diesel version was sold in Japan as the LD20 Toyota Blizzard. In Indonesia it was built until 1995 as the Taft GT (short wheelbase), Rocky (F75) and, from 1988, the mostly rear-wheel-drive Hiline/Feroza (F69) — including a locally developed five-door GTL wagon on a longer wheelbase with sliding rear windows — all with the 2.8-litre naturally aspirated DL diesel of 53 kW (71 hp).
