FactCupra skipped the usual alphanumeric SUV name and reached for a map instead — the Formentor is named after a peninsula on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
The Cupra Formentor is a compact crossover SUV (C-segment) manufactured by the Spanish car manufacturer SEAT under its Cupra performance-oriented sub-brand, marketed as a coupé SUV and the first car designed specifically for the sub-brand. It was previewed as a near-production concept vehicle at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, and the production version was revealed in March 2020 after its unveiling was postponed when the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. It is named after the Formentor peninsula on the Spanish island of Mallorca, and production started in late September 2020. It is based on the Volkswagen Group MQB Evo platform, shared with the SEAT León Mk4. The range runs from an entry-level 1.5-litre turbo with 150 PS to a 2.0-litre turbo with 310 PS for VZ models (from the Spanish word veloz, meaning "fast") and a range-topping VZ5 with a 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo generating 390 PS; a 1.4-litre plug-in hybrid delivers an approximate range of 50 km in full-electric mode. The facelift was officially revealed in April 2024.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

IIHS only crash-tests the driver's corner; tested on the passenger side instead, the CX-5 showed far worse intrusion.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.

Rear passengers get a 17.3-inch screen that extends from the roof, and a lidar sensor sits in the front of the roof.

Its range-extender variant is rated for 1,200 km on a tank and charge, over three times the car's electric-only range.
