Donato Coco's successor to the Xsara, with production starting at Mulhouse in September 2004 on the PSA PF2 platform shared with the Peugeot 307 and 308 and, later, the C4 Picasso, DS4 and DS 5LS. It came as a three-door coupé, a five-door hatchback and a four-door saloon (also badged Citroën C-Triomphe and C-Quatrè), with the C4 Picasso MPV as a five-door variant, and was assembled in China (Wuhan, DPCA) and Argentina too. The petrol range ran from a 1.4 to the 2.0 VTS coupé (177 PS, 141 mph), including from 2008 a 1.6 THP turbo with 150 PS, and the diesels were 1.6 and 2.0 HDi with common rail. Argentina built it from 2007 to 2015. ANCAP's 2005 test gave 14.96 of 16 frontal offset.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Citroën dropped the hatchback shape entirely for this C4, betting the whole C-segment car on a coupe-SUV silhouette instead.

Citroën skipped a three-door second-generation C4, partly so it wouldn't steal sales from the DS3.
