FactThis Song very nearly launched under a completely different name — BYD planned to call it the S3 like its F3 and S6 siblings, then switched to the Chinese-dynasty naming scheme days before launch.
The original BYD Song debuted at the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show (on sale October 2015), BYD's first entry into the compact crossover market, sold under the ICE name it kept even after the hybrid Qin and Tang moved to dynasty names. Two petrol powertrains were offered at launch, a 1.5-litre turbo BYD476ZQA and a 2.0-litre turbo BYD487ZQA, alongside EV300/EV400 electric versions using a 218 hp (310 Nm) motor; petrol versions were discontinued in March 2022 when BYD ended ICE production. Wheelbase 2,660 mm (104.7 in), length 4,565 mm (179.7 in), width 1,830 mm (72.0 in), height 1,720 mm (67.7 in).

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Every Defender before this one was body-on-frame — this generation broke decades of tradition with an aluminium unibody structure instead.

Crashed on the passenger side instead of the driver's, the 2014 Forester showed far more intrusion and would have rated Marginal with the IIHS.

The L405 was the first Range Rover with a fully aluminum monocoque body, cutting up to 420 kg from the outgoing steel-bodied L322.

Rear passengers get a 17.3-inch screen that extends from the roof, and a lidar sensor sits in the front of the roof.

Its range-extender variant is rated for 1,200 km on a tank and charge, over three times the car's electric-only range.
