FactA 130 PS diesel wore the badge GT, built alongside a sedan version made in Brazil, South Africa and China.
The Volkswagen Polo Mk4 is the fourth generation of the Polo supermini, marketed from early 2002 to 2010 in most countries where Volkswagen manufactured, except Argentina and the USA, and built at Wolfsburg and at plants in Belgium, Spain, Slovakia, Brazil, South Africa and China on the Volkswagen Group A04 (PQ24) platform shared with the SEAT Ibiza Mk3, SEAT Córdoba Mk2, Škoda Fabia and Volkswagen Fox. The engine range comprised a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol (55 or 64 PS depending on the number of valves), 1.4 and 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrols, the 1.8T GTI, a 1.9-litre SDI diesel and newer TDI PD turbodiesels of 1.4 and 1.9 litres. A sporty 1.9 TDI PD model named Polo GT was launched in 2004 with 130 PS, and a sedan version was launched in November 2003, produced in Brazil, South Africa and China.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

This is the first Polo generation Volkswagen refused to build with three doors at all.

The GTI's twincharged 1.4 made 180 PS by stacking a supercharger and turbo on the same engine.

A 130 PS diesel wore the badge GT, built alongside a sedan version made in Brazil, South Africa and China.

This was the first Polo ever offered with a turbodiesel, a 1.9-litre, though only in 6K models before the 2000 facelift.

A tiny supercharged Polo quietly set world records: the limited GT G40 used VW's G-Lader supercharger for 1300cc-class endurance records, years before the same tech reached the Golf G60.

It was the cheaper twin of the Audi 50, which sold so poorly Audi killed its own car off in 1978.

Japan was a minor market for the Swift: when it passed 2 million sales in 2011, about 39% were in India and 27% in Europe, against roughly 15% at home.

To adapt the Horizon for America, Chrysler bought nearly 100 Volkswagen Rabbits purely to reverse engineer them.

The Mk3 Focus RS's AWD system could send 100 percent of engine power to the rear wheels alone — built not in Ford's home country, but at the Saarlouis plant in Germany.

In June 2003, a Mégane II became the subject of the first ever live televised crash test with a real human driver at the wheel instead of a dummy — filmed by Top Gear.

This Wagon R redesigned its rear doors specifically to kill off the D-pillar — bigger doors with built-in quarter glass solved what earlier generations needed a whole extra pillar for.

The BX was the UK's best-selling diesel car for four years from 1987, and 2,315,739 were built in all.

Six months before Suzuki retired the Fronte name for good, the CN11S's 796cc version was already being built in China under a completely different name: the Anchi 6330.

Built to use up Chrysler-Simca's parts bin, it took its engine and gearbox straight from the front-wheel-drive Simca 1100 but mounted them amidships instead.
