The Golf Mk8 (Golf VIII) is the eighth generation of the Volkswagen Golf, launched in Wolfsburg on 24 October 2019 and in German showrooms from December 2019. It uses the MQB Evo platform shared with the fourth-generation Audi A3 and SEAT León, and is sold as a five-door hatchback and, from September 2020, an estate (Variant) with a raised Alltrack version. All its combustion engines are turbocharged three- or four-cylinder units, with petrol, mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, diesel and natural-gas versions. A mild facelift, the Golf Mk8.5, followed in January 2024.

Volkswagen once dropped a 650 PS Bentley W12 into a one-off Golf GTI concept, just to show it could.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger bought one of these Golfs in 1999, sold it after becoming Pope Benedict XVI, and it later fetched about $244,000 on eBay.

This Golf became the first Volkswagen to win European Car of the Year, in 1992.

VW built a Golf too fast for its own lineup: the 210 PS G60 Limited outran everything below the Mk4 R32 and sold mostly to VAG executives.
