Volkswagen's highest-volume seller from 1983, the second-generation Golf (6.3 million built, German production ending in late 1992) on the A2 platform, as a 3- or 5-door hatchback designed by Herbert Schäfer. Besides the GTI (catalogued separately) it spawned the supercharged G60 and its rare 210 PS G60 Limited (priced about DM 68,500 in 1989 and sold mostly to VAG executives, the most powerful Golf until the 241 PS Mk4 R32), the Syncro (VW's first four-wheel-drive Golf, from February 1986, with a Steyr-Daimler-Puch viscous coupling sending up to 48% to the rear and only about 16,000 built to 1989), the 5,000-off Rallye Golf homologation special (Syncro drive, 1,763 cc G60 to stay under 3 litres, about DM 50,000) and the Golf Country (7,735 built). Petrol and diesel from 1.0 to 2.0 L, and 100 citySTROMer electric cars. The GTI variants are catalogued separately; the trims below are the volume, G60, Syncro, Rallye and diesel engines.
