FactThe late Grantura's chassis was reworked to also underpin the V8-engined Griffith — TVR's modest sports car and its big-engined sibling shared the same bones.
The Mark III of 1962 had a completely new, longer and stiffer chassis with coil-sprung independent suspension, designed by John Thurner, which formed the basis of TVR's chassis until the 2500M of 1972, with a new front end and higher grille. It used the BMC B-series 1,622 cc and, standard from about September 1963, the 1,798 cc MG "B" engine (Ford and Coventry Climax units remained available on early cars). The 1800S of 1965 had a cut-off, square-back "Manx tail" with round Ford Cortina rear lights and a modified chassis with reshaped top rails that made room for the Griffith's V8; after a pause in late 1965 under Martin Lilley's new ownership it returned in early 1966 as the Mark III 1800S, followed quickly by the Mk IV with a longer wheelbase, more luxurious trim and a larger fuel tank. Around 300 were built (about 60 Mark III, 30–35 Mark III 1800, 128 1800S / Mark III 1800S and 78 Mk IV) before the Vixen replaced them in 1967; the Mark III 1800, homologated for racing in April 1964 (June 1965 for the ultimate wide-rim spec), is the rarest yet most popular Grantura in pre-1966 historic competition, and the 1962/63 Mark IIIs are eligible for pre-63 events including the Classic Le Mans.

Did you know the TVR Grantura Mark IIa could be ordered with Lotus Elite power? Its optional Coventry Climax FWA 1.2L engine was the exact same unit fitted to Lotus's featherweight Elite.

The Grantura had no rear trunk opening at all — accessing the boot meant reaching in from inside the car, and pulling the spare wheel out through the front doors.

TVR's very first production car, the Grantura Mark I, ran independent rear suspension cobbled together from a VW Beetle, an MGA differential and Austin-Healey brakes — years before most rivals ditched the solid axle.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
