FactToyota called the XP160 Probox a mere 'facelift' — commercial-vehicle buyers hate change — but Japan's own type-approval system disagreed and classified it as an entirely new generation.
The second-generation Probox was published on 6 August 2014 with sales from 1 September, presented as a facelift alongside the redesigned Succeed to avoid putting off buyers who dislike needless change, though the Japanese type-approval system treats it as a new generation (XP160). The body is unchanged from the A-pillar back, but new stricter emissions and fuel-consumption rules forced a move from the NBC platform to the new B platform (which was too wide and had to be narrowed by 60 mm), the more efficient 1.3-litre 1NR-FE in place of the old 1.3, and only ever the Super CVT-i transmission; the 1.5-litre 1NZ-FE and a 1NZ-FXE hybrid (NHP160V) complete the range. The Succeed was discontinued in May 2020 while the Probox sold 48,000 units in 2021; very minor improvements in August 2020 brought redesigned wing mirrors and certification of some models to new fuel-consumption and emissions standards, and since 2018 a rebadged version has been sold in Japan as the Mazda Familia Van. The Probox is extensively used as a taxi in Peru, Bolivia and Jamaica, is one of the most popular cars in East Africa (Kenya banned its use as a minibus in 2019 for overloading to 14 passengers instead of five), and right-hand-drive Japanese imports are common in Myanmar.

Owning one
An estimate, for the Probox 1.3 1NR-FE (NSP160V) trim: fuel on its EPA figure and a dated national price, upkeep on a per-mile average for the kind of car it is.

To beat Nissan's AD Van on cargo space, Toyota hid the Probox's rear shock absorbers under the floor, tilted backwards, an unusual trick for a basic work van.

Cooling the C6 RS6’s twin-turbo V10 took seven separate radiators and four electric fans under the bonnet.

The original RS6 debuted Audi's clever hydraulic Dynamic Ride Control suspension — and enough owners got tired of its leaking dampers that they ripped the whole system out for plain coilovers.

The C7-generation RS6 Avant never officially reached America at all — buyers there got the RS7 Sportback instead, running the exact same engine and platform in a different body.

For a few years, this Outback's six-cylinder trim came with genuine McIntosh audio — the same esteemed hi-fi name found in home theaters, one of the only cars ever to get it from the factory.

Subaru didn't have the budget for an all-new SUV, so it dressed up a Legacy wagon instead. A Subaru of America executive later put it bluntly: "[the Outback] saved our company."

The new Outback's full-width tail light bar has a 2 ft ruler built in, for measuring whatever you are about to load.

This Outback shared Top Gear's Car of the Year crown — an unusual honor for a jacked-up wagon to split with the Ford Mondeo in 2007.

A wagon beat the SUVs at their own game: this Outback generation won Motor Trend's Sport/Utility of the Year award for 2010.
