With the arrival of the third-generation Legacy the Outback wagon became its own model; the new body, introduced in Japan in September 1998 as the Lancaster, was smoother, rounder and about 3 inches longer with a slightly longer wheelbase, the US-spec Outback following in 2000. A new low-end-torque 2.5 L SOHC boxer made 165 hp (SAE) with 166 lb-ft, and the Lancaster 6 (April 2000) brought back Subaru's flat-six, sold in the US as the H6-3.0 (with L.L.Bean and VDC versions, the latter with a 200 W McIntosh stereo and the VTD 45/55 AWD system). Ground clearance was 7.3 in. Rear suspension was redesigned to free trunk space. The Legacy SUS became the Outback sedan in North America, and Japan's Lancaster ADA (Active Driving Assist, September 1999) used two CCD cameras, the forerunner of EyeSight. Nissan's Japan-only Avenir Blaster of October 2000 was a competitor.
