FactA wagon beat the SUVs at their own game: this Outback generation won Motor Trend's Sport/Utility of the Year award for 2010.
Based on the fifth-generation Legacy, introduced in April 2009 at the New York Auto Show on the 15th anniversary of the first Outback's debut, and in Japan on 20 May 2009; the "Legacy" prefix was dropped internationally. Ground clearance rose to 8.7 in, and it was Subaru's ninth CVT vehicle, with a new double-wishbone rear suspension and cradle-mounted front structure. The frameless side windows and the D-pillar glass of earlier Outbacks were dropped, and the turbocharged engine was no longer offered internationally. North American trims were 2.5i (EJ253, then FB25B from 2013 with a 6-speed manual or Lineartronic CVT with paddle-shifted virtual gears) and 3.6R (EZ36 flat-six), each in base, Premium and Limited grades; the 2.0 L EE20 turbo diesel was distinguished by a hood scoop. It won Motor Trend's 2010 Sport/Utility of the Year. The page gives no power figures for this generation.

Owning one
An estimate, for the EE20 2.0 L DOHC turbodiesel trim: fuel on its EPA figure and a dated national price, upkeep on a per-mile average for the kind of car it is.

The new Outback's full-width tail light bar has a 2 ft ruler built in, for measuring whatever you are about to load.

One model props up an entire segment: the Outback alone accounts for more than 80% of all new station wagons sold in the US.

This Outback's high beams never fully switch off — Subaru's Adaptive Driving Beam instead shutters out just the part of the light hitting oncoming drivers.

A wagon beat the SUVs at their own game: this Outback generation won Motor Trend's Sport/Utility of the Year award for 2010.

This Outback shared Top Gear's Car of the Year crown — an unusual honor for a jacked-up wagon to split with the Ford Mondeo in 2007.

For a few years, this Outback's six-cylinder trim came with genuine McIntosh audio — the same esteemed hi-fi name found in home theaters, one of the only cars ever to get it from the factory.

Subaru didn't have the budget for an all-new SUV, so it dressed up a Legacy wagon instead. A Subaru of America executive later put it bluntly: "[the Outback] saved our company."

Same body, same money, other badges — tap any card to flip.

Cooling the C6 RS6’s twin-turbo V10 took seven separate radiators and four electric fans under the bonnet.

The original RS6 debuted Audi's clever hydraulic Dynamic Ride Control suspension — and enough owners got tired of its leaking dampers that they ripped the whole system out for plain coilovers.

The C7-generation RS6 Avant never officially reached America at all — buyers there got the RS7 Sportback instead, running the exact same engine and platform in a different body.
