FactWhen Shelby ended his Ford deal mid-1969, leftover cars were federally re-numbered as 1970 models under FBI supervision.
For 1969 the Shelby GT500 dropped the Cobra name and received an extensive facelift, its body at least 4 inches longer, with Ford leading the design. It kept the 428 cubic-inch (7.0-litre) FE V8 with a four-speed manual or three-speed automatic. Carroll Shelby ended his agreement with Ford in summer 1969; no 1970 cars were built, and unsold 1969 cars were re-numbered as 1970 models under FBI supervision with a chin spoiler, hood stripes and a modified carburettor. A total of 789 GT350s and GT500s were re-VINed.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Ford officially rated the GT500KR's 428 Cobra Jet at just 335 hp — a figure long considered a significant underestimate of the "King of the Road's" real output.

The first GT500 ran a cop-car engine — a 428 Police Interceptor V8, fed through dual four-barrel Holley carburetors for 355 bhp.

The CTR Anniversary looks like a 911 but Ruf built its carbon monocoque from scratch, no Porsche body underneath.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
