When Shelby ended his Ford deal mid-1969, leftover cars were federally re-numbered as 1970 models under FBI supervision.

Ford officially rated the GT500KR's 428 Cobra Jet at just 335 hp — a figure long considered a significant underestimate of the "King of the Road's" real output.

The first GT500 ran a cop-car engine — a 428 Police Interceptor V8, fed through dual four-barrel Holley carburetors for 355 bhp.
