Launched in October 1984, within 18 months of rival superminis from Ford, General Motors, Peugeot, Fiat and Nissan, and at first only as a three-door (right-hand-drive UK cars from January 1985). It closely resembled the first generation but the bodyshell and platform were completely new (the platform based on the Renault 9 and 11) with a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and styling by Marcello Gandini. The line-up ran from 1.0 to 1.7 litres with a 1.6 diesel, the sporting GT Turbo from February 1985 (a revised version from July 1987), and a panel-van version, the Express (Extra in the UK, Rapid in German-speaking countries). Belgian firm EBS built about 1,400 convertibles in 1989, 14 of them on the right-hand-drive GT Turbo Phase II. The name returned in February 2024 on an electric hatchback inspired by the original and the R5 Turbo.
