FactThe hot-hatch Mégane RS shares its bones with an unlikely relative: the Nissan Sentra B16 sold in North America rode on the same Mégane II platform.
The first Mégane RS, introduced in September 2004 on the Mégane II in three- and five-door hatchbacks, built at Dieppe from Palencia-made shells, with a turbocharged 2.0 L (225 PS, 0–100 km/h in 6.5 s, top speed about 240 km/h, 90% of the torque available from 2,000 rpm) and a twin-scroll turbo, double-axis strut front suspension and electric steering. The 225 Cup (2005) added the Cup Chassis; the July 2006 facelift added tapered headlights and translucent tail-lamps. The 230 Renault F1 Team R26 (2006–09) commemorated the 2005–06 F1 titles, with a limited-slip differential for the first time, and a 2.0 dCi 175 diesel followed in 2007. A lighter, 123 kg-lighter R26.R (450 built) is catalogued separately, and the mid-engined 3.5 V6 Trophy (330 PS) was a race-only car. The Mégane RS was the first in its class to score five Euro NCAP stars.

SEAT set a front-wheel-drive Nürburgring record with the Leon Cupra 280 — so Renault built the 275 Trophy-R specifically to steal it back, and reclaimed the title just weeks later.
